National Museum of the American Indian Catalog Number 19/4527 also "[s]aid to have been purchased from Chief Sitting Bull (Tatanka Iyotanka, Hunkpapa Lakota, ca. 1831-1890) by William Carpenter in 1888; acquired by J. M. Eaton (owner of an antiques store in Centralia, Washington) from William Carpenter at an unknown date; purchased by Dr. Charles F. Elvers (of Baltimore, Maryland) from J. M. Eaton in 1932; acquired by MAI in 1937 through an exchange with Dr. Elvers.
